Red Poppy 是新西兰的战争纪念日花，因为在一战战场上遍地都开着red poppy。每到ANZAC day，4月25日，几乎所有人都佩带这种胸花，以纪念死难的将士们。ANZAC的意思是一战时期的澳纽军团Australia New Zealand Army Corp。
关于Red Poppy的传说，最早来自于加拿大的军医John McCrae在1915年5月写的一首诗‘In Flanders Fields’。主持完在战场上牺牲的朋友的葬礼后，看到遍野的Red Poppy，McCrae有感而发，之后就把诗仍了，但被战友拣起并寄给了英国杂志社PUNCH。这首诗发表于1915年12月。诗文如下：
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
